You have a point with FFXIV. Thematically, it looks like a carbon copy of old FFs, but I think it's too early to denounce the game by any strech beyond that. The Online component could be more robust than anything we might imagine...and PS3 exclusive? E3 gamewinner, man.

Not really a E3 winner, sure it's big news but lets think back. FF11 wasn't anything special and it ended up a small dedicated community more than anything.

I'll stand by it that FF11 and FFXIV should be in their own named series and not in the main series. The Online final fantasies should at least do a x-2 style thing.
