There is this feature that Nintendo could implement and it's basically figurines that you buy. The Nintendo Figurine Platform.
It's not official but they could make us buy figurines to unlock characters.
They probably wont do it. Unless they want Smash Bros. like Skylanders.

I saw that video a month or so ago and although I didn't even know about Attack on Titan at that time I was extremely impressed with how well made it is.

Also I didn't expect the Bullet Bill item to actually go Mario Kart on us. I wonder if it's instant upon pickup or activated.
