"I love this country. We could not have a better friend and ally," Obama told a closing news conference with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

"I'm looking forward to this being the start of a continued extraordinary relationship between our two countries."

Obama has a Canadian brother-in-law and two of his key staff members are from Canada.

No better friend and ally? Has he completely forgotten about how much Britain has licked our arse in the recent past? xD

Uhh. He was talking about Canada, not Britain? And yeah I wouldn't call Britain our greatest ally, but Canada wouldn't be. That title easily goes to France.

Uhh. Yeah?

It's just political soundbites. Don't read too deeply into it.

I know. Just made me laugh how easily they'll give out such compliments.

I wonder how many states he "loved" in the election campaign.

Pfft, southwestern states, duh.[/lol]

Tell all the kids they're the favorite and they'll do whatever you want.

What?

Britain is:

The fifth or sixth largest economy in the world;
Part of the Commonwealth, G8, EU, UN Security Council;
Has one of the best equipped and trained Armed Forces in the world;
Historically linked to America.

Obama isn't going to abandon Britain, he'd be a fool to.

Still, good to see America and Canada geting along. I remember when the Yanks tried to invade the Canadians in 1812, but we British weren't having it, and we successfully repelled the invasion.

Them were the days...

Oh yeah, and Obama has English blood in him.

To be fair, "you" were trying to invade their territory as well, and you were blocking their trade with France.

Downing Street has confirmed Prime Minister Gordon Brown will be visiting US president Barack Obama on 3 March.

It will be the first time the two have met face-to-face since Mr Obama was elected last year.

A White House statement said the US and UK had a "special partnership" and the president wanted to work closely with Mr Brown on "common global challenges".

The leaders are expected to discuss the global financial crisis and strategy in Afghanistan, among other issues.

These include an economic summit in London to be held in April and the upcoming 60th anniversary NATO summit in Strasbourg-Kehl.

Mr Brown will not be the first serving leader visit the new president in Washington.

Mr Obama is due to host Japanese prime minister Taro Aso on Tuesday.

'Deep affection'

BBC political correspondent Reeta Chakrabarti said Mr Brown's visit was important because many people would be monitoring the personal relationship that might develop between the two leaders.

She said that there had been no reaction from Downing Street earlier this year when former prime minister Tony Blair visited Mr Obama in Washington.

Mr Obama and Mr Brown last met in person when the then presidential candidate visited London last July.

Then, Mr Obama said he shared a desire with Mr Brown to strengthen the trans-Atlantic relationship to solve problems that could not be tackled by countries acting on their own.

He also spoke of a "deep and abiding affection for the British people in America and a fascination with all things British".

How ironic that this news comes to light on the day of this threads creation.

umm... the us never invaded canada. Canada came in 1867, the war ladted 1812-1814. they tried to bloody britains nose after the brits were pirating american ships. only problem came when the upper & lower were able to (with native help) repel the invasion. had not britain returned michigan to the us following the treatise, the upper and lower would have gained land, instead of losing land. We have to remember than the brits took michigan, detroit, all of lake erie, all the way down to washington. ive learned a lot abou that war. ive seen the plains of most of the major/minor battles. i love minutes from queenston, where the entire war turned against the US.
