Sound like pop-ups, then it probably had nothing to do with the site. Check to make sure your browser has a pop-up blocker. If you mean ads like on the home page or on the side of the page, then there is nothing you can do about those.

i hated the dementium, bwii, and fire emblem ones. they either constantly made really annoying sounds or expanded to half your screen at will.

Ya, the ad blockers block certain elements on the page. Images, frames, flash, etc. We aren't talking about popup blockers.....
