This has just been bugging me so much and I have absolutely nothing to do at the moment besides play Mario Kart. You all know you wouldn't like me even better at that game, now would you?

So, anyway, everyone must have noticed that Nintendo are trying to be more 'girl friendly' with their games, and have somewhat slumped into a casual game spiral of doom, apart from those major releases we're all looking forward to.

If you're in Britain, you should notice on Nintendo's most recent adverts there's a pretty little blonde girl who seems to take her DS everywhere and manages to not get mugged. Then it made me realise, nearly all of the titles are aimed at freaking girls, it's bad enough that there's pink everywhere now, but targeting a specific audience by stereotype is pathetic.

My sister bought a DS for Nintendogs, I forgot what version it was, but like it really matters. I was board to death after I'd ran out of insults to name my tricks, and winning all of those competitions was too easy. In fact, the dogs are too needy as well. I do not get pleasure from washing a dog, I can do that with my own.

You've all bristled across them in the shops, but they're becoming more frequent, the major releases are miles away, but that's what keeps me going. What type of concept is Cooking Mama aaaanyway? I don't know how to cook, clean, wash a freaking dog or do anything domestic, and I don't want to learn with these games that are supposedly aimed at me. I want my Smash Bros!

A really good girl game should only just be considered any normal game. What in your point of view defines a female videogame? Because, hell, I don't really care if I play a male character or not.

I suppose people pick up the cheapest thing they can find to buy for their kids, and they're somehow being brainwashed by all of these crap games. That's not leading your daughter in the right path, start her off with the good games, not the pretty little pink ones. Of course girls are going to suck at games if you start them off on something like that anyway, they won't want to play it again. Most of them are based on movies or TV shows, and that's always going to be bad. Don't we need something a little more original that isn't cute?

You've all gathered, girl games is another way of writing kiddy games. The main focus on this with the advertising is going to lose Nintendo out, big time. There's a reason why 360 games are selling so much better, it's because those parents with their daughters have only bought one game and they'll think it'll keep them happy forever. No, try something with a little skill involved.

Awful boy games are just called bad games... I don't want to be in a category like thaaat... Because we're not all the same;

"Is Paper Mario in today?"
"No, but would you be interested in Cooking Mama?"
"...No."

It gets annoying when you go buy a game... Gender specific games are just demeaning... Will they ever get rid of them?

I told you Adam, don't leave me alone with freedom of speech.

i called them.....kiddy games. Those kind of game are going to keep coming in by truck loads. They wont go away since the parents of those kids want to give their children "child friendly games". Good thing in over 18 and able to buy those mature games from keeping me from going insane. I feel sorry for you though because the parents are going to continue brainwashing their kids into become better people.

gah! Horses was lame! destroy!

They probably wont. I like that some girls seem to be specifically for girls. Since I am one :)

Well you dont have to buy them.
Who can blame Nintendo for geting the part of the market other consoles cant. (even thow im mostly seeing adds for Maro gallaxy)
Its called sales at the end of the day its the "Disney mini game pack theamed round the newest film" will sell more than "something not film based"

I'm not going to buy them, I hate walking into shops seeing advertisements like that, no good gamers are going to come along and give Nintendo a go any more. I chose the 64 because the games looked great to me when I was little, I didn't care about what girly titles there were. There's too many in stock, and too many on display, it just gives distaste to Nintendo's image.

I support good games, not Disney games. If Nintendo are focussing on launching all of these pathetic little girly games, and third parties are willing to join in then I'm sorry I misjudged what Nintendo was about. I thought they'd at least go for quality over money.

You dont have to look at them
But the realese of the simpsons game makes me sad (Every console on the same day)
Anyway if the amount of kiddy games bother you get a PS3 and enjoy your lack of sales and games

Now think if Nintendo wasnt leting these games come out thed still be in the same situation as they are with the Game cube (nobody buying)

Think about it if nobody was buying it nobody whould be makein games for it

I really don't think that you're getting my point here. If I don't buy them, and nobody else buys them apart from the gullible parents then people are going to think that's all the Wii has to offer, and the DS, when quite frankly it has so much more games that deserve the attention of our gaming shelves. It influences people who look, and I don't want to be tied down for being the one who owns the 'girly console' with no good games.

I adored my GameCube, it had some cracking titles, there was just no advertising scheme there at all. They've just chosen the wrong angle here.

Do like I do
Dont give a smeg what people think of your console of choice
If you have mates round for a games session get them to play your non kiddy games

I agree for the most part. If someone's first impression of the Wii or gaming in general is some crappy licensed throw together, then they're more than likely going to be turned off.

I typically like games that are skill based, with some complexity. If the challenge isn't there, I tend to get bored very quickly.

Now, as far as what I consider a typical girl game? (MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA)

Ponies and/or unicorns, rainbows, fluffy clouds, kittens, make-up, something having to do with a relationship, a mall, spending money, and doilies... lots and lots of lacey doilies

Haha.

I think there are enough skill based games out there, they just don't get pushed to the female gender because employees at major retail stores have a mindset to where they see a girl looking at games we automatically think, what are some of the easier games that might keep them interested, but usually we ask what kind of games they're into before recommending anything (Worked for Best Buy). It's the ones that just flat out go, oh would you like to play a game with "girly" things and not very difficult at all, that obviously get to you.

My sister and gf would both rather play games that involve skill, than games that are only "gender specific." So I understand where you're coming from. This sentiment of "too many girl games" is more true when it comes to DS games I believe than Wii games, am I correct?

More on the topic:

Crappy games also have a ripple effect. If someone plays a game or two on a specific console, they might associate the bad gaming experience to the console as opposed to the game itself. They will then tell their friends about it, and they in turn will be less likely to purchase the console. I can see this happening more typically to the casual gamer, who isn't likely to take the time to actually research a game or console on their own.

The Wii does have the advantage of motion control, so it's not a typical console, and can sell on that feature alone - which it seems to be doing.

If someone bought me something like Metroid Prime or Mario Strikers Charged, I'd probably start crying.
I need the girly games. And a variety of them, at that. Look at me, the stereotypical girl ~*gamer*~
I actually have Cooking Mama on pause. I suck at cracking teh eggs, that **** is hard.
I'm not domestic either...at all. Toasted bagels and ramen noodles FTW.
That is all.

In my opinion, there shouldn't be any advertisement for any "childrens products". Today, we're sutured into the idea of capitalism and commercialism and so very few question it. Some even see it as natural.

Most of the "girl" games are specifically targetting that age of girls when they do usual "maternal" things: dolls, cooking, looking after things etc...

Although, gaming in general is regarded as "naturally masculine", which I also dislike the idea of, and that exactly where Nintendo are doing things right. Take for example Phantom Hourglass's ads. Some of those are targetted towards girls/women, despite the Zelda games being associated as "Longtime gaming" and therefore "naturally masculine". Compare that to Ocarina of Time's, "Whilst thou save the girl, or play like one", and you begin to see a serious difference in attitudes towards female gamers.

That's not to say, however, that somebody won't appreciate things like cooking mama, although it's wrong to assume and especially push onto a girl, that specific game simply because of her gender. In essence, Nintendo as a company = generally good, age wise and gender wise. People selling Nintendo products (either in a game shop, or in things like ONM) = not good and rely to heavily on gender stereotypes.

Wow, remind me never to get on your bad side.
Anyway, I agree with you on all sections, since I have a sister who feels the same way. Girls can be just as "hardcore" as boys when it comes down to games, but I don't think that these kind of games will ever go away. As long as there are parents who continue to purchase these sort of games for their children, these games will continue to thrive.
